In keeping with the Mexican National Crusade Against Hunger, directors of the National Chamber of the Fish and Aquaculture Industry united their forces yesterday to donate two tons of fresh fish to 2,000 families with limited economic resources living on the periphery of the city.
The distribution yesterday brings the total amount of fish given away this year by businessmen Fernando Medrano Freeman, Jesús Loya Gaxiola, Jaime Osuna Magaña and Humberto Becerra Batista to seven tons.
Becerra Batista, vice-president of Canainpesca, said yesterday they have been distributing free fish for several years with the assistance of the municipal DIF (family services) office, Alcoholics Anonymous groups and the Rotary Club.
This year residents of the outlying colonias of Valles del Ejido, Ampliación Valles de Ejido, Colosio Sí, Renato Vega, Salinas, Felicidad and Monte Bello lined up for free curbina, bocadulce, mojarra and burritos donated by local fishermen.
This year in particular when the economy has not improved, it is important that citizens and businesses realize the problem and help with this type of assistance that doesn´t cost anything, said the vice-president.
He added they are planning a free donation of squid, which is rich in proteins, during squid fishing season which will begin shortly.
