A sudden wind storm around 6pm yesterday afternoon caught beachgoers by surprise as cold wind gusts up to 60 kilometers per hour blew through the city producing swirling sand and high waves.
Head of the local meteorological service, Hugo Nordahl, explained the winds formed part of Cold Front Number 43 from Chihuhua which reached south to Sinaloa, Baja California, Zacatecas, Coahuila and Sonora.
By 7:30pm, the winds had abated.
No damage was caused in Mazatlán by the surprise windstorm, but in Culiacán electricity went out, trees were uprooted and billboards knocked down causing traffic chaos.
