Energy reform garners praise

Veracruz Gov. Javier Duarte de Ochoa said that last year’s energy reform, as promoted by President Enrique Peña Nieto, will make Mexico an important, competitive and successful global actor.
“It’s time to transform and modernize the country’s energy sector under the management of the state and take advantage of the great potential of our natural resources to create growth and opportunities in the coming years,” Duarte de Ochoa said.
His comments were made on Tuesday during a ceremony commemorating the anniversary Mexico’s 1938 oil expropriation, the first to be held following a controversial energy reform that opened up state-run oil company Pemex to private investment.
Duarte de Ochoa said that the reform, promoted by fellow Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) member Peña Nieto, will allow Pemex to reverse its flagging production rates and accelerate Mexico’s economic development.
“Celebrating this March 18 should be something that motivates us to move forward together and secure a future Mexico that is capable of taking advantage of its energy potential for the well-being of its people,” he said, adding that it was in Veracruz where then-candidate Peña Nieto announced his energy reform plans.
“Today, as the president of Mexico, he’s meeting his promises to promote a closer and more harmonious relationship between Pemex and state governments,” he said.
The oil and natural gas industry is of prime economic importance in Veracruz, as the state and its coastal waters contain 41 percent of the country’s crude oil reserves and 59 percent of its natural gas reserves.
