Durango: With the promise to drive the regional economy forward and extend cultural ties, Durango city and Mazatlán officially became sister cities yesterday where the Mayors of both cities signed the official documents.

Both Mayors told media at the signing that following the opening of the Mazatlán-Durango superhighway the next project is to construct a railway line to solidify their cities as leaders in the Northern Economic Corridor.

Without the rail line, said Mazatlán Mayor Carlos Felton, it will be impossible to move merchandise generated by the new economic corridor as they expect container traffic to increase from 200,000 units to three million annually. He added that 800 million pesos has been approved for the dredging of the Mazatlán harbor with 300 million to be spent this year.

On a separate topic, Mayor Felton announced that a selection of Carnaval floats will be sent to Durango City accompanied by the Queens of Carnaval 2014, fulfilling a promise he made to Durango Mayor Esteban Villegas Villarreal. A date has yet to be set, he added.

At a working conference attended by representatives of Canirac, ADIM, AMPI, Coparmex, Codesin and the Business Coordination Council, Mayor Villegas Villareal said investors from Taiwan, Korea, Canada and Chile have expressed interest in both Mazatlán and Durango and for that reason a spirit of cooperation is necessary between the two cities.
