Spain's secretary of state for Trade arrived Tuesday in Mexico to meet with high government officials and business leaders to agree upon the subjects to be discussed at the next meeting of the Mexico-Spain Binational Commission.
Jaime Garcia-Legaz met with a delegation of the Mexican Economy Secretariat headed by the deputy secretary for Foreign Trade, Francisco de Rosenzweig.
The two men presided over a meeting of the Subcommission of Economic-Financial Affairs of the 11th Mexico-Spain Binational Commission, to be held later this year in Mexico.
The closed-door meeting included a review of the macroeconomic situation in Mexico and Spain, along with matters involving labor, trade and investment, finance, taxes, communications, tourism and energy, officials told Efe.
Before Garcia-Legaz leaves Mexico on Wednesday, he is expected to meet with representatives of Spanish companies operating in Mexico.
The 10th Mexico-Spain Binational Commission met in May 2012 in Madrid.
On the eve of his arrival in Mexico, Garcia-Legaz published in the Mexican daily Reforma an analysis of the economic ties between the two countries.
He recalled that Mexico is the leading market for Spanish exports to Latin America, with a volume estimated at more than 3 billion euros ($4.05 billion) last year, while Mexican exports to Spain reached 5.8 billion euros ($7.93 billion).
"Mexico has become the second largest non-European foreign investor in Spain, and the sixth in the world, with an accumulated volume of 5 billion euros ($6.75 billion)," he wrote.
