With just a few days remaining before Carnaval 2014 begins, the Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Consumidor (federal consumer protection office or Profeco) opened a new service module yesterday in the state Secretary of Tourism (Sectur) building on the Malecón.

The Profeco office previously located on 21 de Marzo street in El Centro was closed approximately two years ago by then Mayor Alejandro Higuera citing lack of funds to pay employees salaries.

Sinaloa Profeco delegate, Jorge Alan Urbina Vidales, told media at the opening that complaints from visitors were many in the port, registering around 30 per month, most concerning hotels and restaurants not respecting posted prices or reservations and non-compliance with timeshare contracts.

With respect to Carnaval, he said that during Carnaval the number of complaints double and for that reason all Profeco state inspectors and some from Mexico City will be concentrated in Mazatlán from February 27 through March 4.

The new location in the office of Sectur on Av. Del Mar is the perfect location to attend to tourists, added Secretary of Tourism Francisco Cordóva Celaya.
