MEXICO CITY – President Enrique Peña Nieto met with King Abdullah II
of Jordan on Thursday at Mexico City’s National Palace, where the two
heads of state signed a series of collaboration agreements on topics
including such as tourism, education and culture.
Peña Nieto said that the purpose of these agreements is to lay the
groundwork for future collaboration, with the eventual goal of
establishing a free trade agreement, which would make Mexico the first
Latin American country to sign an economic treaty with Jordan.
Mexico’s primary exports to Jordan include trucks, cattle and
legumes, while its primary imports include natural calcium phosphates,
mineral fertilizers and other chemicals, as well as aerosol devices.
Jordan is currently Mexico’s 88th most important trade partner, while
Mexico is Jordan’s 53rd most important trade partner. Jordan is the
Middle Eastern country with the 11th highest number of investments in
Mexico.
King Abdullah II said that his country occupies a strategic location,
making it a trade portal for Asia, Africa and Europe. “Today’s meeting
will deepen ties, not only between Jordan and Mexico, but between the
Arab world and Latin America in general,” he said.
The King also said that Mexico could help negotiate an end to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
“We feel that Mexico, with its international strength, fulfills a
major role,” he said, adding that a lasting solution to this conflict is
“the only way that we can have peace and stability in the Middle East.”
