Rosario Robles Berlanga, Secretary of Social Development in Peña Nieto’s administration, said that during 2014 the government plans to invest 4 billion pesos ($300 million) in electrical infrastructure projects in more than 5,000 rural and urban communities.

The electrification projects will be funded jointly by Secretariat of Social Development, the state-owned electric company Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and the National Commission for the Development of Indigenous Peoples. Rosario Robles said the projects would benefit an estimated 1.9 million Mexicans.

The projects will include municipalities targeted under the National Crusade against Hunger program, as well as other low-income communities that still lack access to electricity.
