A U.K. envoy will meet with Mexican government and industry leaders on Feb. 4-5, the Mexican Ambassador to the U.K. said on Monday.

Ambassador Diego Gómez Pickering said that, in the United Kingdom’s eyes, Mexico has probably become Latin America’s most important spokesperson due to its structural reforms carried out in the last few months.

He said that British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Commerce Minister Lord Ian Paul Livingston and 43 business leaders from energy, automotive, aerospace, financial and education sectors will be visiting Mexico this week with an optimistic goal of doubling bilateral trade by 2015.

Trade between Mexico and the U.K. is currently more than $5 billion, a figure which is expected to reach $7 billion this year.

Gómez Pickering added that this visit should set the precedent for other high-level U.K. functionaries from the U.K. to visit Mexico and visa-versa, creating more opportunities for multilateral trade and cooperation on issues such as democracy, free market and climate change.

He said that he is optimistic about the future of the countries’ bilateral relations, not only in issues between governments, but also between the private sectors.

The U.K. currently has trade and investment teams in Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara and Tijuana to promote the export of U.K. services and goods, as well as to facilitate investment projects, according to the U.K. government website.
