Mexico and Ecuador seek to boost bilateral cooperation

Foreign Relations Secretary José Antonio Meade traveled on Tuesday to Quito, Ecuador, to discuss bilateral issues with his Ecuadorian counterpart Ricardo Patiño Aroca.

While at the fourth Mexico-Ecuador Mutual Interest Issues Consultation Mechanism meeting today, the two secretaries will discuss the legal framework within both countries share relations and explore the different ways in which this could be updated. They will also analyze new possible additions to the agreement, including areas such as finance, culture, sports, social development and education.

A Mexican Foreign Affairs Secretariat (SRE) press release said that a chapter will be added to the agreement to revise bilateral cooperation on the subjects of technology, science, education and culture.

Mexico offers annual scholarships to Ecuadorian students for postgrad education and research, a scholarship program in Latin America through the Education and Training Alliance Program (PAEC) provided by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the National Science and Technology Council (CONACYT).

The meeting will also begin to explore ways to increase economic and commercial relations between the two countries with the goal of raising investment flows from both directions.

Presidents Enrique Peña Nieto and Rafael Correa met recently at the Latin American Community Summit (Celac) in Havana, Cuba, where they outlined priorities increase cooperation between the two nations.
