The Mexico State government on Monday opened a new immigrants’ center in Chicago, Illinois, called Casa Estado de México.

“Mexico is living in extraordinary times of great importance and relevance with the structural reforms.
Thanks to the consensus generated between political parties and legislators, local legislators have approved reforms that have been at a standstill for decades, that no one tried to promote,” Gov. Eruviel Ávila Villegas said during the opening of the immigrant center.

With the reforms that Mexico is moving forward, there is still work to do. We have to finish … the secondary laws, but I would like to share with you that we are very content with what is going on and the governors that we have help to make sure that this work continues.”

Accompanied by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, Ávila Villegas said that actions like the opening of the Casa Estado de México demonstrate that it is possible to better serve the migrant community living in the U.S. when authorities and immigrant-group leaders work together.

Quinn said that there is a history of friendship between Chicago and Mexico, and expressed his willingness to cooperate on environmental, trade and academic issues.

Chicago’s Casa Estado de México, under the responsibility of Esther Burgos Jiménez, will assist Mexico State immigrants with legal advice and protection, advising services for U.S. investors interested in opportunities in Mexico State and the issuing of official documents such as birth and marriage certificates.

Information from the Institute of Mexicans in the Exterior shows that Illinois is the state with the second-most immigrants from Mexico State after California, being mostly concentrated in the cities of Chicago and Waukegan.

Quinn later met with Ávila Villegas privately to further discuss points of cooperation in which the two governors can work together to benefit both states.
