MEXICO CITY – President Enrique Peña Nieto on Monday said that the country is ready to face the flu season, having learnt the lessons from the 2009 epidemic, which caused more than 1,500 deaths.

“Today we know that it is a curable virus and that vaccines exist which should especially be administered to the parts of the population in greater risk: children from six to five years old, senior citizens and pregnant women,” Peña Nieto said at the inauguration of the General Hospital of Axapusco, Mexico State.

He said that Mexico has become more informed on flu treatments, and that another 2009 scenario would not repeat itself.

Flu vaccinations in Mexico for children under six years old and adults over 65 began in 2004.
He said that Mexico, like many other countries in the world, have developed attention protocols for citizens with flu-symptoms.

Peña Nieto also said that those who have a fever, body pains or any other kinds of flu-related symptoms should not self-medicate and should see a doctor immediately, “because there is medicine that allows this sickness to be cured.”
