MEXICO CITY – Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta praised Mexico’s
energy reform while discussing ways to update the EU-Mexico Free Trade
Agreement while visiting the nation on Tuesday.
In the first visit of an Italian Prime Minister to Mexico in 24
years, Letta made his comments at a conference with Mexican Foreign
Relations Secretariat. “Growth is the child of technological
innovation,” he said, adding that Mexico’s reforms are fundamental to
this growth.
“If I could appreciate from the outside, an observers position is
that the energy is a great occasion, a great positive opportunity for
consumers, companies and the country,” Letta said.
He said that his country and all Europe are interested in the
consequences of the energy reform, as those who have employed such
reforms have “become stronger because the liberation has obligated them
to internationalize.”
Letta said that the future bilateral relation is rich in
opportunities because of the similarities and the affinities between the
two countries. He added that he would like to re-inspire this relation
by favoring Mexican exports and investments in Italy.
Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary José Antonio Meade attended the
conference, along with a Mexican diplomatic team made up of academics,
businessmen, government officials and students from several
universities.
Letta also visited Querétaro, where he met Gov. José Calzada Rovirosa
and the Italian business community. Italian firms in the area have a
presence in metal, plastic, chemical and construction industries.
