The Durango state government has reopened an inactive gold mine 40 years after it was shut down.
According to Durango state government information, the mine, located
in Magistral del Oro in the north of the state, will create
approximately 500 jobs. A government press release said on Sunday that
Gov. Jorge Herrera Caldera’s administration has invested heavily in the
mine’s facilities and equipment to make the operation both successful
and safe.
“The job positions will go straight to benefitting residents and
landowners of Magistral del Oro as it will create 100 jobs directly and
more than 400 jobs indirectly, something that will require the
participation of young professionals graduating from the region’s
technological institutions,” Herrera said.
Abraham Kilp, a spokesperson for the project, said that it would
bring much needed money to the region, kickstarting an ailing economy
and improving the standard of living of those living close by. Kilp
added that it would also help restore the region’s identity, drawing it
closer to its roots in mining.
Herrera attended an official opening at the mine where he cut a
ribbon and took a guided tour of its facilities. He was accompanied by
Durango Social Development Secretary Arturo Yáñez Cuéllar, Economic
Development Secretary Ricardo Navarrete and a number of representatives
involved in the project.
