MEXICO CITY – Given that natural gas is the cleanest-burning fossil
fuel on the planet, it would be a shame to not take advantage of it in
Mexico to combat climate change, said Environmental Secretary Juan José
Guerra Abud on Monday.
Guerra Abud made these comments in an interview after the first day
of the 25th National Ambassadors and Consuls Meeting, in which he said
that it is up to the Energy Secretary to determine which is the best way
to exploit this natural resource.
While natural gas burns slightly cleaner than oil and coal, it is
mainly composed of methane, a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon
dioxide.
“Just so no one has any doubts: the Environmental Secretariat
guarantees that, whether it be Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) or any other
company authorized to exploit this gas, the highest environmental
standards will be respected in order to not damage the environment with
this activity,” said Guerra Abud.
He said that natural gas will be taken advantage of because it is the
cleanest burning fossil fuel, which could contribute to the reduction
of greenhouse gasses.
He added that Mexico will be attending a climate-change meeting of Latin American leaders in the coming few months.
Guerra Abud said that he called upon ambassadors and consuls in
yesterday’s meeting to promote the best possible reforestation and
municipal waste programs in the countries which they represent Mexico.
