MEXICO CITY – The federal government said on Wednesday that it would
work with a single “open list” of beneficiaries of National Crusade
Against Hunger funds.
National Digital Strategy Coordinator Alejandra Lagunes Soto on
Wednesday presented the 2013-15 Plan of Action for an Open Government,
which will promote transparency in government purchases.
She said that all of the distributed funds for the National Crusade
Against Hunger are being entered into a single registry, adding that the
government absolutely respects rights to privacy and protection of
personal data.
“Citizens will be able to see where public money goes, but at the
same time we will promote citizen participation in the definition of
budget priorities,” she added.
Lagunes Soto said that the Plan of Action also considers the
possibility of making all changes in governmental bodies public,
including information in the granting of government contracts.
She said that the project “is a new model for governance that looks
to transform the relation between society and government to strengthen
democracy.”
President Enrique Peña Nieto said through a recorded message that he
promises to push forward government initiatives that contribute to the
construction of greater spaces of dialogue with the goal of improving
governmental openness standards.
Lagunes Soto said that this is the answer to citizen demand for the
government to transform. She added that this plan of action with a
two-year time frame will favorably impact the population by being an
instrument to increase productivity and competitiveness in the country.
Peña Nieto said that the plan is “based in a culture of transparency,
collaboration, participation and account auditing that allows the
creation of new undertakings in the generation of solutions to public
problems.”
These moves for transparency have been promoted by the Open
Government Partnership, a voluntary international organization that
incorporates different governmental bodies to work in concert to provide
greater citizens access to the government’s actions, in turn fomenting
confidence.
