Felipe de Jesús Álvarez Cibrián, president of
the Jalisco Human Rights Commission (CEDHJ), announced on Wednesday that
the state government will launch a new gender equality commission,
which he said would promote institutional equality between men and
women.
Álvarez Cibrián said that work on the new commission, which he said
will be based on the model of the National Human Rights Commission
(CNDH), will formally begin in February.
He went on to say that the goal of the gender equality commission
will be to defend and promote the equality of women, as they are
increasingly the victims of violations of their human rights.
The support of the CNDH has been essential, Álvarez Cibrián said, in
developing mechanisms and policies to achieve the comprehensive
development of Jalisco families. He added that this work requires
interim strategies to implement a gender equality perspective across the
bord, from handling complaints and criminal charges to training state
and municipal public servants.
According to Álvarez Cibrián, it’s important to analyze gender
equality from a sociological aspect to determine how to best modify the
state’s laws, adding that this is the best way to promote peace,
eliminate discrimination and violence and create a society based on the
respect for human rights.
“The criminal violence that exists in our society, without doubt, has
a an origin, and the most important origin is the family,” he said.
“Important questions arise that have a connection to these phenomena
that begin with the family.”
