Three train projects for 1st quarter of 2014

Ministry of Communications announced three major railroad projects, saying that Requests for Proposals would be released in the first quarter of next year. The projects are the México-Toluca, Transpeninsular (Yucatán) and Light Train System for Guadalajara.

The México-Toluca train is projected to travel at a maximum speed of 100 mph with a capacity of 1,400 passengers. The 47-mile route will connect Mexico City with Toluca, capital of the state of Mexico. The estimated cost is US$2 billion.

The Mérida-Playa del Carmen train is projected to travel at a speed of 110 mph with a capacity of 1,000 passengers. The rail line will cross the Yucatán Peninsula linking the colonial city of Mérida to the beach resorts of the Mayan Riviera. The estimated cost of this project is US$1.2 billion.

The final project is the Light Train System of Guadalajara, which will travel at a maximum speed of 55 mph with a capacity of 500 passengers. The estimated investment amount is US$2 billion.

The Ministry of Communications said that by 2018, a total of 550 miles of railways will have been added to the country’s railway system. The Ministry said some of the projects include:
  1. Bullet train between Querétaro-Ciudad de México.
  2. Lines 3 and 4 for the Monterrey Metro System.
  3. Train from Aguascalientes-Jalisco.
