For director general Ernesto Rivera Valdéz, this could be the beginning of an alternative market for mangos in the región where 22,000 hectares are dedicated to producing the fruit mainly in Escuinapa, El Rosario and part of Concordia.
Southern Sinaloa has the optimum conditions and perfect micro-climate for growing the best mangos in the world in abundance, he told media.
During the previous season of May to September, approximately 50,000 tons of mangos were grown, a large part of which go as fresh produce to the United States. However, he pointed out, when there is a surplice of the product the price drops. In his opinion, organic products are a good way to improve revenue as there is a tendency towards more nutritious products which cost more.
Productos Rivera is certified in the United States as an organic food grower which facilitated opening a market in Europe, said Rivera Valdéz.
Every year the company sends 100 tons of dehydrated mango to the United States under the brand “Peeled Snacks” which are sold in Starbucks, Whole Foods Market, CVS, Draeger´s Market, Wegmans, Hudson News and other stores.
During the season, Productos Rivera employs 150 people, but the object said the general manager is to keep everyone employed all year by exporting natural and seasoned dehydrated mangos or a combination of fruits.
