During 2013, Mexico has strengthened its presence in the world thanks
to President Enrique Peña Nieto’s 16 official visits to countries which
together represent 55 percent of the world’s population and 89 percent
of the world Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the Foreign Relations
Secretariat (SRE) said in a Wednesday press release.
According to the press release, this focus on foreign relations is in
line with the four foreign policy goals indicated in the Peña Nieto
administration’s National Development Plan: consolidating Mexico’s
presence on the world stage, strengthening development-oriented
international cooperation, promoting Mexico through a worldwide
advertising campaign and promoting the interests of the country and its
citizens abroad.
The foreign policy achievements of Peña Nieto’s first year in office
include improving relations between Mexico and Asia, a new focus on
Europe, increased cooperation with the United States and Canada, and
renewed ties with the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean, the press
release went on to say.
In Latin America, the press release said that the Pacific Alliance —
which also includes Chile, Colombia and Peru — has been further
consolidated, while Mexico has also deepened its strategic relationship
with Cuba and institutionalized its relationship with Central American
countries through the establishment of the Mexico-SICA (Central American
Integration System) Summit.
Peña Nieto was also invited to participate in the 2013 G-8 summit
alongside major world powers and participated in the formation of the
MIKTA group — representing Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey and
Australia — during the G-20 summit in Russia.
