MEXICO CITY – The Foreign Relations Secretariat (SRE) has announced
that it has brought Mexico into a new era of relations with Latin
America and the Caribbean in a 2013 self-evaluation report.
The SRE said that these relations have been focused on the promotion
of increased dialogue, understanding and cooperation “that will help to
promote and protect the interests of Mexico and Mexicans in the region.”
It also said that Mexico has profited from membership in groups such
as the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and the
Organization of American States (Oas).
It said that these organizations have been used as “essential forums”
for building understanding and consensus on subjects of global and
regional relevance, such as peace, security, the respect of human
rights, dialogue, regional cooperation and the fight against hunger and
poverty.
The SRE also emphasized the importance of forums such as the Pacific
Alliance, which has achieved 100 percent commercial tax liberalization,
the awarding of 260 scholarships to students of member countries (Chile,
Colombia, Mexico and Peru) and the elimination of the visa requirement
for Colombians and Peruvians, which has increased the number of tourists
from those countries by 75 percent in the last 9 months.
Mexico has also obtained the presidency pro-tempore of the
Association of Caribbean States (AEC), where the principal focus is on
natural disasters, transportation interconnectivity and sustainable
tourism.
