José González Morfín, vice president of the Chamber of Deputies and
member of the opposition National Action Party (PAN), said on Sunday
that, with the recent passage of the energy reform, the federal
government will no longer be able to offer any excuses for the lack of
economic development in Mexico.
González Morfín said that Congress has done its part to ensure
economic growth by passing the reform, adding that now it’s the job of
the Enrique Peña Nieto administration to ensure that these changes have
an effect. He added that he’s worried that the intense publicity
campaign launched by the federal government to convince people about the
benefits of the reform, primarily advertising government expectations
of a drop in gas prices, will create unrealistic expectations among
citizens.
“Nobody can claim these changes as unilaterally theirs nor paint a
picture of a future full of promises that won’t be seen in the short
term,” he said. “On the contrary, it has to be everyone’s responsibility
to promote the development of Mexico under this new legal framework and
 work to achieve good results”
He went on to say that the Peña Nieto administration cannot complain
of not having the ideal conditions for economic growth and the
transformation of Mexico, as the ruling Institutional Revolutionary
Party (PRI) has the support of opposition parties in congress —
something that he said the PAN lacked when it ruled Mexico between 2000
and 2012.
