The toll charges for using the Mazatlán-Durango highway
are considered to be some of the highest in the country. These charges
were the subject of discussion in Durango between officials with the
Capufe, México’s federal agency for roads and bridges, the governor of
the state of Durango, Jorge Herrera Caldera, the mayor of the city of
Durango, Estaban Villegas Villerreal, and officials from Mazatlán.
In response to questions regarding whether the cost of
passing through the four toll booths was adversely affecting tourist
traffic, Villegas noted that during the first 15 days during which tolls
were charged, traffic was up 90%.
He acknowledged that in relation to other parts of the
country the tolls were high, but pointed out the tremendous cost of
building this stretch of the highway. Nevertheless Capufe was asked to
consider reducing the toll charges.
