After a three year wait, the expansion and modernization of Mazatlán’s port will begin today.

The dredging part of the project will increase the draft of the port to between 34 and 42 feet (10.36 to 12.80 meters) in order to accommodate larger vessels.

In addition to dredging, the entrance to Mazatlán’s port will be increased to 200 meters (656 feet).

Although the initial phase is budgeted to cost 300 million pesos ($23.5 million), the total cost will be approximately 1.3 billion pesos ($101.5 million),

In addition to the dredging there will be three distinct and separate docks; one for cruise ships, one for Mazatlán’s fishing fleet, and one for cargo ships.

A ceremony with state officials will kick off the project following the ceremony welcoming Mazatlán’s first cruise ship is several years.
