Mexico is at a historical crossroads that will define its future, President Enrique Peña Nieto said at the Eleventh Annual Business Summit in Guadalajara on Tuesday.

Peña Nieto told domestic and foreign business and political leaders that the economic reforms being proposed by his administration have the goal of creating a more prosperous and inclusive Mexico.

“I’m sure that the reforms were solidifying will be firm and concrete, and will allow Mexico to see improved economic growth and gretaer social development,” Peña Nieto said.

The telecommunications reform passed in June, he said, aims to “avoid monopolies and create a more competitive environment so that the population will have access to more and better services in this sector.”

He went on to say that his proposed tax reform, which has been approved by the Chamber of Deputies but has yet to be voted on in the Senate, does more than just raise taxes, it also seeks to “close loopholes and legal subterfuges that allow some taxpayers to avoid paying what they owe.”

According to Peña Nieto, the financial reform — which is at the same stage as the tax reform — will make it easier for individuals and businesses to access credit, which he said is an important aspect of economic development.
