Laredo will soon experience an increase in goods and cargo being processed through here from and to the Port of Mazatlán on the Mexican Pacific coast thanks to a new stretch of highway currently under construction between Mazatlán and Durango.

Laredo Bridge Director Mario Maldonado said the director of the Port of Mazatlán, Jorge Cárdenas, was invited to tour the local import/export facilities in anticipation of the increase in traffic.

“The existing route is longer and the new shorter road should reduce the travel time between five to seven hours between those two cities. This will in turn reduce the travel time between Mazatlán and Laredo, so we expect more shipments to be coming in through the Port of Mazatlán to Port Laredo,” Maldonado said.

Cárdenas said he was impressed by the volume of cargo moving through Laredo and was looking forward to learning more about the operations here.

He said the new stretch of highway will facilitate the connection between the gulf coast to the Pacific coast and will create a “superhighway” for cargo traveling both directions.

Distance comparisons between Mazatlán and three ports posted showed 726 miles via Nogales, Arizona, 677 miles via Pharr and 645 miles via Laredo.
