Jagdish Chander, Director, International Cooperation, Department of Science and Technology, on Monday said that a proposal to start a joint doctorate in philosophy in any of the pure or applied sciences between India and Mexico is in the pipeline.
Addressing a three-day workshop on Biotechnology: Beyond Borders, organised by National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), he said, "There are various countries that have shown interest in running a joint PhD programme with us. Talks to start such a joint PhD programme are on between Department of Science and Technology and its Mexican counterpart Consejo Nacional De Ciencia Y Technolagia. It will take some time to finalise logistics," said Chander. He added, "The science and technology innovation policy focuses on inclusive growth and research to serve large population of society."
Asis Datta, Founder Director, National Institute of Plant Genome Research, who was the chief guest at the function, said the ultimate challenge of science is to remove hunger and poverty in the world.
"Genetically Modified crops are the way for future as they can be modified to suppress bad quality, increase nutritional value and shelf life of vegetables and fruits," said Datta.
Sourav Pal, Director, NCL, said, "Cinvestav from Mexico and Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research are in talks to have a joint PhD programme. Not only will this help students but also facilitate good faculty interaction."
