October 17, 2013 (Día de El Caminero) was confirmed yesterday by the Sinaloa Secretary of Tourism as the inauguration date for the much anticipated Mazatlán-Durango highway.

Considered the country’s most important investment in new highways, the highway will open with a special inauguration program tentatively to be held at the site of the Baluarte Bridge, the most emblematic structure of the project, announced Francisco Córdova Celaya.

The State functionary said all Sinaloa and national motorcycle clubs together with a large contingent of businessmen and government authorities will be invited to the ceremony. He added they are expecting Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to attend.

At the same time that the Secretary of Tourism was announcing the inauguration of the super highway, ejidatarios (owners of communal property) advised that if an agreement was not reached by tomorrow for reparations for damage caused by highway construction in Sinaloa, Nayarit and Durango and payment for the people´s land, they would “mobilize” before, during and after October 17.

Representatives of the ejidatarios told media that this morning in Mazatlán they will meet for talks and analysis to resolve the dispute between the federal government and themselves. At the meeting they expect the attendance of the sub-secretary of infrastructure and other representatives of the SCT (secretariat of communications and transportation) from Sinaloa, Durango and Nayarit.
