If the federal Secretary of Communications and Transportation authorizes it, demolishing the historic Casa del Marino will cost one million pesos.

The unidentified committee advancing the proposal to remove Casa del Marino on Av. Paseo Claussen has put forward the request to the federal authority, said architect César Llanos Rivero.

He told reporters yesterday that if they are permitted to remove the building the land will become the property of the municipality, the true owner, and belong to the citizens of Mazatlán.

The plan is to remove the poor image and risks associated with the decaying Casa del Marino building and at the same time improve the historic 31 de Marzo Fort located behind it. If we don’t take the building down, he said, one day it will collapse and be a danger to anyone passing by.

Further justifying the proposal, the architect said Casa del Marino not only sits on valuable land but also blocks an historic site. He went on to say the Navy feels it owns the 31 de Marzo Fort but has no intention of recognizing the difference in value between the two buildings and the right of Mazatlecans to visit the fort. Llanos Rivero said they are certain the demolition will provide more public space and increase the value of the emblematic fort.

The demolition proposal is being evaluated by ten former Mazatlán mayors and was recently discussed by the members of the municipal council, several of whom were in agreement with the proposal.
