A spokesperson for the Bus Alliance of Mazatlán announced that the first Alcancía Inteligente (Intelligent Piggybank) was installed yesterday.

The new payment system installed on local transit buses will accept prepaid cards and exact change for a bus fare.

Carlos Osuna Osuna, head of the union, said the new payment system will enhance the safety of both the passenger and driver and help ensure a quality service. He said, “This step in modernization is in addition to the installation of the Global Positioning System (GPS), which allows us to know the location of a bus, the General Packet Radio System (GPRS), which provides data on how many passengers board the bus, and the Alcancía Inteligente, which will prevent the driver from directly handling the money which will lower the rate of assaults.”

Osuna Osuna said the new system would go into effect next Monday, but only with respect to accurate collection of fares. He said by the end of November the new system will have been installed in all buses.

The sale and distribution of prepaid cards is still under consideration and a date for the implementation of that aspect of the system is not known.

The union head also said that the union will be going to two shifts for bus drivers and a remuneration system in which the number of passenger tickets sold does not affect the income of the bus drivers.
