Alfonso Gil Díaz, Director General of the Mazatlán Port Authority (API), announced that the dredging of the city’s port will begin in October. The contract for the dredging operation was awarded to Dragamex S.A. de C.V.

Dredging, the first stage of the modernization of Mazatlán’s port, will increase the depth of the port from 10 meters (33 ft.) to 14.5 meters (46ft.).  The greater depth will reach from the jetties to the end of the shipping harbor and permit ships equal in size to those handled by Manzanillo to dock in Mazatlán.

The cost of the dredging operation will be 300 million pesos ($23.5 million) and the funds have been earmarked.

Gil Díaz said the final plans call for new docking areas for cruise chips, ferries, and cargo ships.
