The increase in commercial investment in north Mazatlán continues with the integration of Sears department store in the Galerías Mazatlán in Marina Mazatlán.

The department store, operated in Mexico by multi-millionaire Carlos Slim, is expected to open its doors at the beginning of 2014.

Also under construction at the same location is a Walmart Super Center store slated to open in December, bringing the total investment of the two projects to 1000 million pesos.

Mazatlán Mayor Alejandro Higuera confirmed the investments, saying he considered this an economic “explosion” which will generate jobs.

He told reporters that while the country is entering a recession, investment in Mazatlán by the richest man in Mexico is bringing an economic explosion to the city.

By way of comparison, the Mayor pointed out the 1,000 million pesos invested in the two stores is 80 percent of the municipality´s annual budget.

The Mayor also announced that Costco will open in Mazatlán, but provided no further information. Costco operates stores in Mexico City, Tijuana, Acapulco, Monterrey and Guadalajara.
