MEXICO CITY – Mexico and Canada have agreed to strengthen bilateral ties on agriculture and to work on common goals in both the public and private sectors. Mexican and Canadian delegates met yesterday as part of the Mexico-Canada Alliance (AMC).

In an agricultural working group, participants agreed to share information and confer on negotiations between Pacific Alliance nations (Mexico, Chile, Peru and Colombia) as well as the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership to help boost trade in cattle products and other agriculture, while also shoring up border control and quality control for exports. The delegates also agreed to work on issues such as sustainability and new farming technology.

General Coordinator of Foreign Affairs Raúl Urteaga Trani said that according to Food Production Secretariat (Sagarpa) head Enrique Martínez y Martínez, these strategies will give Mexican food producers the tools they need to increase productivity and become more competitive.

Canada invested $4.2 billion in Mexico in 2011 and is the fourth-largest foreign investor in Mexico.
