Mexico tourism agencies to be separated

By Arnie Weissmann

Rodolfo Lopez-NegreteMexico's Secretary of Tourism Claudia Ruiz Massieu will soon announce a reorganization of the ministry of tourism that includes the promotion of Mexico Tourism Board COO Rodolfo Lopez-Negrete to the position of CEO. It is also intended to restore greater autonomy to the board.

The tourism ministry comprises both the tourism board and Fonatur, which sets policy and organizes the development of tourism zones (Cancun and Ixtapa are among areas developed by Fonatur). The secretary of tourism is chair of both boards.

Traditionally, CEOs have been appointed for each group, but former secretary of tourism Gloria Guevara took on the dual roles of chairman and CEO of the tourist board.

Going forward, the two groups will be "aligned" but no longer interconnected.

Observers in Mexico say the move will separate the tourism board from the sometimes volatile Mexican political scene.

Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto has reportedly approved both the reorganization and Lopez-Negrete's promotion.
