According to the Strategic Communication Consultancy (GCE), eight out of every 10 Mexicans are relatively happy, despite economic, social and political differences and problems.

The agency reported on Sunday that researchers found that factors such as income, marital status, age, gender and creed, among others, did not make a difference, busting myths about happiness.

The GCE conducted polls on their website, Kaleydoscopio.mx, where 56 percent of survey respondents said that they did not think that wealth was a factor for happiness, while 37.1 percent said that it was.

Regarding whether or not marital status was an influencing factor for happiness, 60.6 percent of Mexicans surveyed rejected the notion that married individuals were happier, while 32.2 percent believed it was and 6.2 percent said they were not sure.

Although there is a long-standing cultural perception that married women are happier than unmarried women, 66 percent of women said they did not agree with this belief, and 55 percent of men held the same opinion. Other topics the survey touched on included differences between the elderly and young people, whether or not having children makes you happier and family ties.

In terms of whether or not spirituality and religious practices affected happiness, on a scale of 1 to 10, 87 percent of Mexican women rated this factor highly, while Mexican men gave it an average score of 8.1.
