Mazatlan’s International Week: Spring and Friendship, March 19 – 25
SecTur (Ministry of Tourism of the State of Sinaloa) will sponsor a week of activities to share with your family and friends. Most of the events are free; those that do carry a fee, the money will be donated to a charity. For five days a different restaurant in Centro Historico will be selected and the chef will present a special lunch of day, at a very affordable price. All sorts of little, yet enticing pop-up events will be occurring. This ambitious, exciting plan is just unfolding. All the details and changes will be updated on http://mazatlanlife.com




Monday March 19

8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pet walk along the Malecon. Amigos de los Animales, and other associations will be joining in.

2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Chef’s surprise lunch in Centro Historico.

6 p.m. The Spectacular 1 Concert, 6 p.m. at Spectaculare in the Golden Zone. The musicians of Mazatlan are coming together to celebrate the release of their new CD, Mazatlan Sampler. Four hours of live music, dancing, sit down dinner and open bar, $400. All musicians (over 12 bands) are donating their time. Call Steve or Pat Hall for tickets, 913 – 4456.

Tuesday March 20

8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Watch Canadian native, Fraser Bannerman, build an inukshuk out of rocks. What’s an inukshuk you ask? It’s an iconic landmark built by Inuit in the Arctic. It’s a sculpture made of unworked stones that the Inuit used as a method of communication. Inukshuk means “in the likeness of a human” or “someone was here.” It is a familiar and friendly sight on the forbidding landscape of the Artic. You’ll be warm though when this is built at the base of El Faro.

2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Chef’s surprise lunch in Centro Historico.

4 p.m. to 11 p.m. It’s party central at Fiesta Corners. Museo de Arte, Macaws, Tippy Toes, The Library, Mexicolors and La Rosi will once again create a fabulous fiesta. Imagine learning the waltz and foxtrot to banda music. After dark, a movie will be screened.

Wednesday March 21

8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The annual Spring Equinox at Las Labradas petroglyphs. This ancient ritual is performed with dignity and meaningful dances and gestures. Wear white.

2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Chef’s surprise lunch in Centro Historico.

5 p.m.The Canadian Consulate, Wendy Hardouin, and Delfos are hosting a dance event where all proceeds will be donated to children with cancer. The talented Delfos contemporary dance company will perform at the Punta Marina.

Thursday March 22

8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Board games, mind game, chess, checkers, poker, dominoes, Scrabble, mahjong, Mexican train, whatever your game is bring it to the Plazula Machado. Tables and chairs will be set up. Play your favourite, or learn a new one.

2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Chef’s surprise lunch in Centro Historico.

4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Zaragoza Square becomes alive with the traditional, weekly Danzon. More music and dancing will be added, plus another movie will be shown after dark.

Friday March 23

8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Your chance to hit a home run in the baseball stadium. Or choose another game, but this huge sandbox is yours to play in all morning long. And when you tire out you can rest in front of one of the many charities which will have kiosks placed around the perimeter. Charities such as Hospice, and a new one, Neighbors who Care/ Vecinos con Cariño will all be there to answer your questions and perhaps find the right match for your pesos or time.

2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Chef’s surprise lunch in Centro Historico.

4 p.m. to 6 p.m. ArtWalk – a special treat for this week of spring and friendship. Glen Rogers and many other artists will open their doors for you to see their paintings, prints, ceramics, sculptures, and many other objets d’arte.

Saturday March 24

8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Of course, start your day at the Farmers Market, Mercado Orgánico in Zaragoza Square. Accompanying all the fresh produce there will be many healthy surprises such as yoga, and meditation.

4 p.m. to 11 p.m. The Rotary Club of North Mazatlan, is hosting The Flight of the Monarch Butterfly/ El Vuelo de la Mariposa. Organizers are predicting as many as 1000 people on Stone Island, Isla de la Piedra. Boat rides to and fro are free, but there is a $400 charge of the event – all of it donated to a charity.

Sunday March 25

8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Spring Beach Festival/ Festival de Primavera en la Playa. More fun and games in the sand and surf. Several hotels are participating, and the location will soon be decided.

2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Annual Friends of Mexico Wine and Cheese Fundraiser will be held at Macaws/Casa de Leyendes. Be sure to buy your tickets soon: March 13 at the monthly FOM meeting, Rico’s Coffee Shop in the GZ on Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon, from any board member, or through FOM’s PayPal secure link. Tickets are $200 and include many raffle prizes.
